Melbourne potter Sophie Moran has established a reputation for quality, contemporary tableware that quietly and gracefully inhabits the home. With a career in ceramics spanning over twenty-five years, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to each piece she crafts.
Prior to completing a Diploma of Arts (Ceramics), Sophie studied philosophy and literature, sparking a lifelong interest in the intersection between thought and act. Pottery provides her with the perfect platform for her investigations. Themes of simplicity, domesticity and connection arise in both the appearance and function of the wares Sophie creates. The forms to which she regularly returns, plates, bowls, cups, teapots, all perform fundamental tasks in daily rituals.
Since graduating from ceramic studies, over twenty years ago, Sophie has continuously taught wheel-thrown pottery, both in her private studio and through institutions. She enjoys seeing others discover things about themselves through pottery, and find the focus, challenge and pleasure working with clay can bring. Creating with students, in an environment of inquiry, strengthens her own skills, knowledge and passion for her craft. Sophie joined us in 2024 to teach in the Intermeidate-Advanced Wheel team.
