Do you want to level up? Perhaps you’ve done some Beginner’s Wheel courses – either with us or elsewhere – or you’ve done plenty more but don’t know how to develop? Let our experienced teachers take your skills to the next level and join one of our 8-week Intermediate/Advanced wheel throwing courses designed to develop you further! Our carefully designed developmental curriculum underpins your learning with structure from which you can jump off to explore your own designs when you are ready!
Our professional potter-teachers will guide you to
- achieve complex and larger forms
- measure for repetition
- understand the use of specialist tools
- dive more deeply into clay, kilns and glazes
- explore your personal design direction and your “signature touch”
- And the icing on the cake? Our *Studio Access Times are available to all weekly students for extra time in the studio! If you miss a class you can do a SAT instead (conditions apply)
Pre-requisites: a minimum two beginner’s courses with us. Please ask your teacher or call us on 99437844 to discuss it. If you have already learnt as a beginner at another school we encourage you to start at our beginner’s level for one term before you move into our Intermediate level. This will give you the chance to learn and adjust to our methods of sitting upright and using the breath.

Content: These eight-week courses are offered four times per year. Students enrol and attend at the same time once a week but also have access to extend their practice time by attending any of our SATs (Studio Access Times – see FAQ page for details). Students will build upon the Japanese techniques they learnt in our Beginners classes and experience a range of other techniques suitable for larger and more complex forms. They continue to underpin their practice with awareness of ergonomically sound techniques. Demonstrations to the group are offered in every class and students are supported to move to individual design and progress as and when their skills permit. Whilst primarily focussing on the skills of the potterʼs wheel, we also introduce some hand-building techniques and encourage an outlook of experimentation and open-ended exploration. A rich pathway is offered within an imaginative and creative framework.
Many students attend long term and make their time at Slow Clay Centre a rich part of their lives. For this reason they have priority to hold their place from term to term. We offer limited Earlybird tickets for future terms.
Fees: $575 Earlybird (limited pre-release), $595 Continuing and concession, $625 Normal. The class fee is fully inclusive of materials, unlimited mid-fire house clay and glazes and access to all studio equipment and tools. Optional personal tool kits are available for $15 and our super-dooper turning/trimming tool is $38. Firing is $15/kg payable at the end of the term upon collection.
*Studio Access Times (SATs): NEW: optional FREE extension hour to all morning classes – value $80! No bookings required. SATs are for our enrolled students to have some extra time in the studio. They are offered to all our weekly students. All materials and use of facilities are included in the fee. SATS are either a FREE one-hour extension to your morning class (usually $10 per session but now offered to all morning students for FREE) or $30 for three hours. Bookings are required for a 3-hour session and you’ll be emailed booking details in your first week. If you miss a class you can use a 3-hour SAT to replace it (limit one per term) plus one extra free SAT if you miss a class due to Covid. Times are generally 112-3pm weekdays and 9-12 Saturdays but are subject to change depending on studio needs.
Please check our FAQ page for updated Terms & Conditions and note we are unable to refund you if you are ill or change your mind. Transfers: We do understand shit happens and life gets busy but we do not give refunds. We can occasionally transfer you at short notice if we have a replacement so please ask if we have someone on the waiting list. There is a $25 fee for all transfers.
