Amelia Black teaches our Glaze and Extended Surface courses and since October 2024 she is our front-of-house office manager, so you will no doubt meet her in the studio or at the end of an email!
Amelia is an American-born ceramic artist and design researcher who can’t stop making! Amelia utilises a broad design skill set to research, make, and ultimately invest in the human experience of ideas through clay. Her work is focused on the materials that make up our ceramic practice and the explorations of where these materials come from today, and what new materials we might be able to engage through ceramic technology to create a more sustainable approach to pottery.
Amelia comes to us with experience as R&D for Anchor Ceramics in Melbourne; established a community-based ceramics studio in Brooklyn, NY; a graduate of the SVA Design Criticism (D-Crit) masters program in New York City; holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture & Designed Objects from the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2009, Amelia was awarded a fellowship at NYU’s Steinhardt School as the Publications Director for the Environmental Health Clinic. Amelia has exhibited her projects in such venues as the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), International Contemporary Furniture Fair, Salone Satellite at the Milan Furniture Fair and the Noguchi Museum.
